Frankfurt, July 25 — Airlines across Europe are using the surge in passenger flights to maximize belly cargo space, offering shippers additional lift at a time when freighter capacity remains tight and demand for urgent shipments continues to rise.
“Passenger flights have become a vital part of our cargo network,” said Martin Keller, capacity planning manager at Lufthansa Cargo. “They allow us to move time-sensitive goods, from pharmaceuticals to fashion, without relying solely on charters.”
Rates remain steady with extra lift
The availability of belly space is helping stabilize air freight rates on key transatlantic and Asia-Europe lanes, even as forwarders scramble to secure space for electronics and retail inventory.
“Without passenger aircraft carrying freight, rates would have climbed much faster this month,” Keller explained.
Ground operations under pressure
The added freight volumes are straining ground handlers, who must balance baggage processing and cargo loading to keep tight turnaround schedules intact.
“Our teams are working extended shifts to make sure nothing falls behind,” said Eva Schneider, a ground operations supervisor at Frankfurt Airport.
