“Green” heavy-lift: Nordic Hamburg orders up to 5 multi-purpose vessels

The Chinese shipyard Wuhu Shipyard has scored a notable hit in the specialized vessel segment: the German shipowner Nordic Hamburg has placed an order for three firm units, with two options, of multipurpose heavy-lift vessels of approximately 13,300 DWT. Objective: to strengthen capabilities capable of transporting oversized cargo, where industrial and energy logistics demand robust solutions.
These ships focus on a performance-oriented design: a hold architecture designed to optimize volumes and a combined lifting capacity that allows for the handling of heavy pieces. The positioning is clear: to serve markets where the exceptional becomes the norm — particularly projects related to wind equipment and other complex industrial loads.
But the announcement also emphasizes the environmental aspect. The project emphasizes an “energy-efficient” approach, incorporating technical solutions aimed at reducing consumption compared to older units, while meeting high emission standards. Result: a product that is both versatile, powerful, and aligned with the industry’s growing pressure on decarbonization.
For Wuhu, this order illustrates a strategy: to gain credibility in the international market for high-end ships by accumulating references in high-value-added segments.
