European Cargo to launch China–Teesside freighter services

European Cargo has announced plans to launch five weekly freighter services between China and Teesside International Airport while establishing a new operational base at the northeast UK airport.
The carrier will deploy its Airbus A340-600 converted freighters, offering 76 tonnes of payload and 440 cubic metres of cargo capacity. The airline primarily serves e-commerce flows from China.
Flights are expected to begin early this month, although specific Chinese destinations have not been confirmed. European Cargo currently operates services to Chengdu and Chongqing.
As part of the agreement, the airline will invest several million pounds into a new operational base at Teesside Airport Business Park.
Airport officials said the service could handle up to 375 tonnes of freight weekly, providing more direct export routes for UK manufacturers.
Managing director Phil Forster described the development as a pivotal milestone strengthening the airport’s commercial positioning and long-term economic role.
European Cargo COO Iain Edwards said the investment reflects confidence in Teesside’s infrastructure and potential as a logistics gateway.
The airline previously operated primarily from Bournemouth and began services from Cardiff in 2024. Teesside had announced plans last year to develop a 750,000 sq ft Airlink cargo hub with direct apron access to enhance freight handling efficiency.
