Extremist Group Claims Railway Bombing in Athens Amid Rising Tensions

A radical left-wing group calling itself “Revolutionary Class Struggle” has claimed responsibility for a bomb attack near the headquarters of Hellenic Train in Athens, in an act of political violence that has reignited fears over rail safety and domestic terrorism in Greece.
The blast, which occurred late Tuesday night, caused structural damage but no injuries, thanks to a warning call received 40 minutes beforehand that allowed emergency services to evacuate the area.
“The perpetrators showed clear intent to make a political statement, not mass casualties,” noted Greek security analyst Nikos Pateras.
A Manifesto of Militancy
In an online statement posted hours after the explosion, the group declared its opposition to the “capitalist state apparatus” and pledged solidarity with the Palestinian resistance and an individual who died in 2024 while attempting to build an explosive device.
The attack appears to be the group’s first public operation and comes amid national outrage over the 2023 Tempi train disaster, which killed 57 people and exposed deep systemic flaws in Greece’s rail infrastructure.
Investigation Underway
Greek authorities have launched a full-scale investigation, including forensic analysis of the device, surveillance footage review, and cell tower data collection. The Hellenic Train company condemned the attack as “a cowardly act of sabotage” and assured the public that service will continue under heightened security protocols.
“This is an escalation we hoped to avoid,” said a senior official at the Ministry of Civil Protection. “We will bring those responsible to justice.”
The attack underscores the fragility of critical transport systems in politically tense environments and the need for enhanced logistics security protocols in urban rail operations.
