“Made in EU”: Brussels is preparing a plan to revive European shipbuilding

The European Union is about to present a series of measures aimed at strengthening “Made in EU” industrial production, with a very concrete maritime component: shipbuilding and equipment. The central idea is to prioritize “non-price” criteria in public policies and market orientation — particularly sustainability and the origin of manufacturing — in order to make European solutions more attractive.
The expected signals could first manifest in segments where Europe already has solid expertise: ferries, tugboats, specialized or research vessels. In parallel, the subcontractor ecosystem (equipment, technical services, retrofit solutions) could benefit from a ripple effect.
Another lever mentioned: access to financing for shipowners, with a potential role for the European Investment Bank to support industrial choices aligned with energy transition objectives. In a context of geopolitical tensions and the transformation of routes, the approach also aims to secure strategic capacities in Europe.
